Gum Chewing

Over the years gum chewing has become a very big topic in schools. Some agree the "solution" that they've developed should be kept the way it is, and some (though very few) think then alternative. I believe that gum chewing provides quick solutions to several matters. not only does it give students an easy and proven way to calm nerves, but I believe it would also help kids who have trouble focusing (even though a lot of people think it would have an opposite effect). Besides this, some teachers allow gum chewing during the MCAS. I'd think that if gum chewing helps students concentrate on a test as important as that, the same would apply for basic academics as well. Without the rule that prohibits gum chewing teachers would have many fewer disruptions in class. Almost every day I heard countless explanations of why gum chewing has been banned. Maybe once or twice I've heard "...because it'll end up under desks or in the floor." I completely respect their opinion, but what if you applied some restrictions? Every freedom we have here at the Robinson Middle School comes with one or two simple rules to follow. Anyway, I'd think that everyone would be grateful enough to follow some guidelines. We may be kids, but we do have some discipline.

They wouldn't allow gum chewing in my day but there was a lot of it stuck on the bottoms of our desks.
